Week of Dec. 12th through 16th

Well, we have had quite a first half of the year. This week should be just as busy as all the others. However, the term busy can be substituted for 'fun' as well. This coming friday is our BETA Variety Show. Which is always fun. I will be performing as well. Stay tuned.
This week in art will be a laid back one. Nonetheless, we all need to stay busy. AP Art History, as usual, will stay on pace for this half of the semester. AP Art Studio has their half way deadline on the 15th. The rest of our studio classes will be working on a project of their choice for their 'final' this week.

Week of December 5th through 9th

Winter break is quickly approaching. As a visual art department, we will be moving in at a pretty quick pace. Which is perfectly fine with me, I tend to work better at such a pace. Nonetheless, we will be continuing in drawing this week will ALL classes. We are doing this, because we all need it. Plus, doing life studies of certain things aids a lot of us for various reasons. This coming week we will be sketching and finishing draped cloth studies. Though they are not easy, the ideals of using and working with line, shape and value will be good for all of us. Including myself.
In AP Art History we are now on pace to enter the Renaissance before break. Which makes me quite happy. The Renaissance is when art really starts to pick up and we begin to see masters work in grand detail.
RHS Art studies can and will ------->
1 Art I- Draped cloth study. Students are to draw from life. Minimum of three sketchbook drawings and one 'finished' drawling by friday December 9th
BREAKFAST- There will be practice sessions for the BETA variety show

Week of Nov. 28 through Dec. 2

Thanksgiving Break is over. It was a pretty good one for me. This coming week will be a busy one. We will be finishing up our lessons on hand built pottery. Hopefully, everything will be dry enough to fire and and we will fire on monday. Through our the week we will be glazing and finishing these vessels.
We will be jumping back into drawing a bit. The theme for this weeks drawing lesson is 'Fists & Feet'. The main goal of these drawing is to create a finished product with a bit of drawing technique involved. Most people find drawing to be some sort of magical thing that only a few people can do. This isn't the case. Drawing takes time. Especially when trying to create something representational. We'll all see after my discussion on it this week.

AP Art History will be diving in Gothic Art with the Renaissance in the near distance. Gothic Art, at times can be over looked, but in lies a grand importance to the set-up for the master's of perspective and humanistic creation.
It is unfortunate that when we think of 'gothic' we think of this --------->
Though, beautiful in it's own right. The 'modern' interpretation of Goth is a lot different.

RHS Art students can ----->
1- Art I: Students will begin the 'Fist & Feet' project

Week of Nov. 14 - 18

Well, welcome to the only full week of November. Quite interesting. Nonetheless, things will be picking up in relation to activity in the art room until winter break. All my classes will heading into the 3D world, with the exception of AP Art History, New Media & AP Art Studio. We will be breaking the clay out to create some hand built pots. We will be creating thrown pottery soon, but not quite yet.
Hand built pottery has been a favorite thing of mine for quite some time. Being able to create a vessel out of clay, forming it using only your hands to a powerful statement. Just think about it. :) Hundreds of songs have been created, relating to this subject.
It is important to make sure that you are deliberate. Pinch pots and coil pots are only as good as the people behind them. Take your time. Use the plastic to cover. Make good art.

     RHS Art students can ----->
1 Art I- Coil pots/Pinch Pots. Demo to be shown
BREAKFAST
2 PLANNING
3 AP Art History- Early Medieval Art/Medieval Art

Week of November 9-11

Wow! What a long weekend can do. Though I've been mostly ill this whole long weekend, it has been great to be able to sit back and relax with family. This week will be an eventful one with the annual Veteran's Day presentation and our short week. The month of November will fly by, so don't blink.

AP Art History students need to make sure and send me your e-mail address. I am starting a 'Group' using our free Microsoft software supplied by the state. In this group will be able to communicate a bit more outside of class for various projects. Sound like a lot more work? Well, not really. It will actually be to your benefit. Make sure to check our site, twitter & here for updates.
AP Art Studio. Your first major deadline is Dec. 16th. Half of your portfolio needs to be complete, including shots, etc. Do not let this date slip up on you.
Since this is a short week, our assignment will be confind a bit. However, thought (as always) is needed to receive a good grade for this assignment. The topic is the human body as landscape. How can you us a picture of a person body to create a landscape-like image?

Week of October 31- November 4th

Well, what a week this past week has been. Our Haunted House has gone pretty well for a first time thing. Our last night is monday night, the 31st. We hope to end with a bang! We still need a few more volunteers for monday night. Please come see me if you are interested.
This coming week all studio classes will be starting on a landscape project. I will be workshopping basic landscape ideas and allowing students to create one from 'memory'. There will be some pretty straight forward steps to this lesson. The irony of this lesson is that this time of year is the best time to create such lessons. However, who knew how much it was going to snow up east? Crazy.

Week of October 24th - 28th

Hello all! Well, we had our first night of the haunted house. Overall, we can say that it was a success. We still need to do some tweaking in order to make it more effective. What we have found is that those that go to haunted house a lot tend to find ours entertaining and a bit scary. However, not so frequent house goers come out pretty scared. Which is good. Nonetheless, we have worked pretty hard on it and it would be awesome to have as many as possible come out to see it. Plus, Dr. Tim Decker and his middle school art classes have done an awesome job of putting on the 'smaller kids' house as well.
This week in art we will be finishing up our look at 'Halloween' type lessons. The lesson that we are working on at the present time is a mixture of all of these lessons. What makes us uncomfortable is a powerful look into the human emotional state. Though we may be opening ourselves up a bit, this lesson isn't going to be censored....within reason. :) Furthermore, this lesson is due friday Oct. 28th at the BEGINNING of class.
AP Art History will be having an essay exam this coming thursday. Please prepare for that.

Art students at RHS can ----->
1st Art I- Uncomfortable Project
BREAKFAST
2nd PLANNING
3rd AP Art History- continuing study into Non-Western Art. Test Thursday

Week of October the 17th - 21st

Fall is officially begun and well, kinda gone. It was cool then it became quite warm again. This has led to our leaves to turn and fall much quicker than usual. Nonetheless, plans for out haunted house has gone quite well. We had our first work day & believe that we are about 80% finished with it. We plan on going back this tuesday for more work. We will be opening the house to the public this saturday (Oct. 22nd). Halloween is my favorite holiday so.....yea!

Week of October 3rd through 6th

Well, another great trip to the St. James Art Show in Louisville, KY. With all the extras going on this year, including homecoming, it really added a bit of stress to Mrs. Russell and I but in the end....ALL WENT GREAT! The students very thankful and appreciative of the trip. Which means a lot to Mrs. Russell and I. One great observation I overhead from a lot of the student this year was the lack of proletariat art. I agree. Though we are in 'old' Louisville, the need to see and interact with practicing artist that are 'more' like us is important. Nonetheless, the potters, artisans, painters, and puppermakers that make the event so enjoyable are working class people. Just like us. Viva the proletariat! :)
Needless to say, since we are in Oct. we are kicking into 'Halloween' mode with design and construction of the haunted house in Downtown Russell. Dr. Decker and I will be posting some pictures of our ideas soon.

Week of Sept. 19th

Hello All! We've a bit busy with things the past several weeks. However, hopefully, we will continue to post a bit more frequent. We are starting to get in the swing of things, school wise, as of late. We are starting to see some pretty good work in all areas. New Media has been fun. However we are still hammering a bit of the kinks out.
Retired Coach Jones has invited us and Dr. Decker's middle art classes to decorate/design a Haunted House for the Downtown Russell Civics League. Still waiting on details.
A lot of our lessons for the coming weeks will be emotion based. As always, if there is particular method or specific thought and ideas that you have PLEASE come to me. It is best to work with you individually on method/technique ideas. However, we absolutely can address these to the whole class as well.

Short week of Sept. 6th

Labor Day was a good long weekend. Hopefully everyone rested well. However, I doubt it. For some reason some many people feel they have to see how much stuff they can cram into one weekend. That is quite unfortunate. But, the way capitalism is we feel left out if we aren't doing or buying something. Which is entirely foolish. Nonetheless, we are starting our unit of emotions this coming week. This weeks theme is 'What makes you Happy?'. We had quite a few good projects out of this last year. We will see where it goes this year. As a whole, we work a bit better this year than last. However, we seem to have a bit more retinal artists in the art room this year as opposed to last. Which, I've had to adapt to. Nonetheless, here is out basic plan for the week.

1st- Art I: What makes we Happy? Project. Students may us media of choice with teachers consent.
2nd- PLANNING
3rd- AP Art History: We begin our study of the Greeks. Gods and Goddess first.

First FULL week

So, the first week went pretty well. I have A LOT of different types of students than I did last year. To be honest, I am quite proud of that. We have a diverse world so why not a diverse art room. We will be hitting 'real' lessons this week. Hopefully, everyone will see the difference between 'get to know me lessons' as opposed to real art lessons.

Week of May 23 through May 27th

These are the end days. No 'rapture' jokes here. It's the truth, we have very little school left. As usual, it will either creep by or speed by. I am sure for the seniors, it will creep by. This weeks assignment, for all classes, was given last wednesday. Final pieces of work should be done, and hung by this coming friday. Also, I am looking for all ceiling tiles to be finished by May 27th as well. This week, we are also going to be doing some extensive cleaning in the art room. Slowly but surely the 'Grizzle Revolution' has moved into the room and by the beginning of next school I hope it will be fully realized. This being said, any art work not account for by this friday will be discarded; trashed. There is a great part of me is sadden by this statement, but for the sake of my sanity (to late) and others it must be done.
Sam is also in the works of making a year in review show for the 'Art-Room & Beyond' web show. This one should be fun for everyone.

copy write worldchanging.com

Oddly enough, last weeks post is AWOL. The topics of the week were 'Change'. However, my students didn't seem to do so well on the project, so I guess a lost week isn't so bad. Nonetheless, this week we will be focusing on friday's Earth Day. I know that many have quite a few comments and responses to this particular day. However, regardless of our religion, faith, or politics we all need to do our part to take care of the place that we live. This, I feel, is a no-brainer. That being said, most of this weeks studio classes will be dedicated to this topic.

However, with the spring comes a lot of renewal. At present time we have quite a few of students in round two for GSA. Three art students, this past weekend, auditioned. Two Masters, Two Opposing Approaches

Two Masters, Two Opposing Approaches to Art
Every profession has its own history in which the accumulation of knowledge is the basis to push the frontiers into the unknown. Dali and Picasso are two masters who stand at the vanguard of two opposite approaches to art in the Twentieth Century: To use that accumulated knowledge and build upon it, or to discard it.
Dali embraced all the science of painting as a way to study the psyche through subconscious images. He called this process the Paranoiac Critical Method. As any paranoiac, the artist should allow these images to reach the conscience, and then do what the paranoiac cannot do: Freeze them on canvas to give consciousness the opportunity to comprehend their meaning. Later on, he expanded the process into the Oniric-Critical Method, in which the artist pays attention to his dreams, freezing them through art, and analyzing them as well. As Freud said, "A dream that is not interpreted is like a letter that is not opened."
Picasso took the opposite approach to art. He inherited the gusto for ugliness, scandal and chaos of the Dada movement and the automatic surrealists. Picasso rejected the craft to become "primitive," deciding that the ingenuity of childhood is the basis of art. To him this meant that the less the artist is preoccupied with his craft the better his art. To Dali, however, the "ingenuity of childhood" meant keeping an open mind and maintaining the curiosity and excitement of the child throughout one's life, not painting as a child.

2/21/11 through 2/25/11

We will be shifting gears a bit this week in the art-room. The warmer weather has given me to push an assignment forward, a bit. Nonetheless, we are "all" getting back into drawing a bit.
AP Art History needs to continue to think about their final 'What is Art' project. Use my school website for the detailed plan.

this week our art students can-
1st- 2D/3D: Hand-scapes- students will create an imaginary landscape involving their hand and/or hands. Your hands need to be as representational as possible. Where as, you background and other continuing images do not need to be.
2nd -Art 1: Hand-scapes- see lesson above
3rd- AP Art History: Surrealism & Modern Art
4th Advanced Art- You biggest complaint. My biggest complaint :This is a first time lesson for me. I've had the concept for years, but honestly, now willing to brave it. Students will split their paper in half. One side will be a drawing of their biggest complaint and the other my biggest complaint of them.
5th AP Art Studio: Still-life drawing of their choice. Minimum of three objects.
6th- PLANNING
7th- Ceramics: finish pinch pots, continue on to coil pots. This week will be our first fire.
