So, the year is on the last leg. We are in the mist of testing. The art show is over. Seniors are receiving caps & gowns. This has been a very difficult year for a lot of us. There really isn't anyway to get around that. Nonetheless, it has also been a great year for results back in the art room. We placed at every show we entered. Week of May 6-10

So, this whole year comes down to the next several weeks. This has been a bitter sweet year. I, like a lot of you, am looking forward to it ending and starting again. Nonetheless, the art show is this thursday. We will put on the best show we can. In fact it will be the best high school art show around.
Here are the lists of things we need for the show------>

- Drinks: any sort of 2liter will do. Please bring these the night of the event.
There will be a sign up sheet for both of these.

I will be matting work this week. Our assignments will be general in nature to deal with this. Feel free to bring in your work to be 'finished up' for the show.

Movin' right alone towards the end of our school year. Some important dates to remember:
April 18th - AP Portfolios are due to Mr. Grizzle
May 9th- Spring Art Show

I have always loved superheros. I have no shame in saying as an artist I was grandly influenced by the artwork in them. To this day, I will imagine using super powers to do various things in my life. Granted, only in my head, but regardless it's a lot of fun. I can honestly say that almost all of us, sometime or another, have wished we had powers like that of a superhero or villian. This week is dedicated to the place where those dreams lie. The place where we are all superheros.

I hope everyone had a restful Spring Break. I know that I did. Thank the Lord it's starting to feel more like spring than is has. I had multiple chances to ride my bike & relax outside. Hopefully, this will push out some of the winter blues. However, let's try to keep our warm weather fever to a minimum while we prepare for the final push of the year.

Week of March 25-29

Visual art and music have gone hand in hand for a long time. In our digital age, the album cover has been deemed a bit less important for sales and more for theme of the group or album. I remember as a child going to the old Kmart with my parents and browsing the record section. The album covers excited, frightened, & interested me all at once. What most people don't understand is that to produce some of these covers it took a lot of time in an artist's life. Regardless if photographed or not, these album covers ARE art. This week in the art room we are paying tribute to just that.

1- 2D/3D: "Album Cover as Art". Students are to create an imaginary cover for a real musical act. The cover must have the following: 1- Acts names or logo, 2- Album title, 3- original artwork IN COLOR. Most album covers are square in nature. Please keep this in mind. Project is due March 29th.
BREAKFAST
2- New Media: "Reworked Childhood Photography". Students are to take an actual childhood photograph and recreate it. Images must to shown side by side. iOS & Android apps will be allowed to be used for this collage idea. Images must be emailed to me by 11:59 March 28.

3- Planning
4- 2D/3D: "Album Cover as Art". Students are to create an imaginary cover for a real musical act. The cover must have the following: 1- Acts names or logo, 2- Album title, 3- original artwork IN COLOR. Most album covers are square in nature. Please keep this in mind. Project is due March 29th.
5- Advanced Art: "Album Cover as Art". Students are to create an imaginary cover for a real musical act. The cover must have the following: 1- Acts names or logo, 2- Album title, 3- original artwork IN COLOR. Most album covers are square in nature. Please keep this in mind. Project is due March 29th.
6- AP Art Studio: Continued portfolio work.
7- Art I: "Complementary Color Flowers". Students will create an image (either pastel or paint) of multiple flowers in complement. There must be at least three representations of each flower or color in the image.

Week of March 18-22

Last week was a good week for the 'kids' back in the art room. We showed very well at the Regional art competition in Morehead. We placed second at EMPixx Awards at Ohio Southern thanks to Madison Cole and Olivia Adkins. Plus, our very own Kathryn Wilhoit was given the Miss Ashland title. I dare anyone to find another classroom in our school that purposefully houses as much talent as we have. Ready? Goooooooo!

This past critiques have been a bit 'off'. Our work has been a bit better but, our 'minds' have been a bit off as well. So, this coming week we will have a 'Your Choice' week. You may select any art form & any subject to show this coming week's critique. The only catch: NO OLD WORK. All work must be as of this past saturday.

Week of March 4-8

This is Tiffany's last week with us. She has been such a huge help to us in the art room. Many teachers use their student teachers as 'break time' or an additional aid in their classroom. I've been lucky enough to have two really great student teachers so far. They, we never my 'aids' or my 'break time'. They were part of our family. Always will. Though similar in various ways Tiffany & Kate helped bring different perspective and energy into the room. I am willing to bet any teacher in our building that they couldn't hang, in various ways, in our room for a week without converting it to their own. Tiffany & Kate came in and not only adapted but perfectly placed their own stamp in our little home. One of the biggest things Tiffany has shown is the ability to be an artist, survive, & never compromise your faith or personal statement. Besides that, she is a fabulous one-on-one teacher and has become a good friend. I will miss her, greatly. However, Ms. Tiffany Botts.....you are now one of my artist family. In that, you'll never truly get rid of me. Namaste young teacher. Namaste.

The craziness that surrounds us during the spring has...well...sprung. This week will be a hit & miss sort of week in relation to projects. Most assignments were given last week and are due this coming wednesday and thursday. Other than that, we all need to be glazing our work as it comes out of the kiln. Tiffany's final critique with AP will be this week as well.

Week of Feb 25- March 1

We've officially entered another large show. Morehead State University Burley-Coal Art Show art work was dropped off this past saturday. After quickly and slyly viewing the other work there I feel pretty good about our chances of showing well. We had some good work represented.
As some of you might have already seen via Instagram, we had quite a large kiln explosion this past friday. I have yet to dig through the bottom levels yet, but I am very confident in saying that the top self and a half, only 20% survived. Some of us will have bit of work to do come monday. However, its part of the game. Move past it.
This coming week is going to be another messy and busy week in the art room. Most if not all classes are working on ceramics and paper mache. Please remember to clean up as best you can before you leave the art room.

Week of Feb 18-22...Do the Harlem Shake...

Hello All!

By the above video, you see that not only do we learn how to create, act, shoot, edit, & view in New Media we also have FUN. That's right: FUN. That horrible three letter word that so many educators are afraid of. Every student in this video chose to be in it. There were NO objections. In fact, in the past there have been plenty of objections to being put in videos. My art students understand and appreciate the word 'no', in the realm of feeling comfortable and when something crosses their own moral line. And, YES high school students do have moral lines. What we expect from them is exactly what we get from them. It's not all about brain development and being able to make 'choices'. These kids study and perform better, academically, than most kids in our state. Then we question their motives and abilities to choose. Granted, they don't always choose wisely. Furthermore, I don't believe we, as adults, do either. Testify.

Let me step off my soap box a second and also tell you that this 30 second video now has more FULL views than any video in RHS history. Not only that.....there is a better one on the way, thanks to the RHS pep section of last friday's game. #RDN. Stay tuned.

This week in the art room will be quite a busy one.....again. Clifton Ross, Olivia Adkins, Kathryn Wilhoit, Anna Reneau, & Emileigh Duvall all made the Ohio University Southern HS Juried Art Show this year. The opening reception will be this thursday at 6pm at the OSU Gallery. Thursday is also the deadline for the Morehead State University KyAEA Regional Art Show. I will be dropping work off at MSU this coming saturday, the 20th. Plus, on a personal note, I have been excepted into the Art Institute of Cincinnati 'Art Teacher' exhibit. I will be mail my work there this week as well.

RHS Art Students can ----->

1- 2D/3D: Clay Vessels: Students will create a hand build vessel of their choice. This is a two week project that consists of various steps and deadlines. Students will be learning how to do: pinch and coil ceramics. Then they will learn to finish, take care, fire, & then glaze their work.

2- New Media: The 'Harlem Shake' craziness has taken over. Out of class Harlem Shake assignment was given last week. It along with or in place of the 'Hate' assignment should be done by this wednesday. An additional 'Public Dancing' assignment will be given this week as well.
3- PLANNING
4- 2D/3D: Clay Vessels: Students will create a hand build vessel of their choice. This is a two week project that consists of various steps and deadlines. Students will be learning how to do: pinch and coil ceramics. Then they will learn to finish, take care, fire, & then glaze their work.

Week of Feb 11-15

February is busy. Hopefully, everyone had a great and safe time at the dance this past saturday. The next big thing to look for is, I guess, spring break. Please keep up with deadlines and assignments over the next several weeks. Make sure to put your work in a good 'home'. Otherwise it may get lost or misplaced. Our custodial workers clean our floors quite well. Whatever ends up on the floor by the end of the day goes in the trash. Please, keep that in mind.
Tiffany has taken off with her assignments this past week. The class she has selected to do her project with is 6th. Her assignment is a good one and if taken seriously can yeld very good results. Plus, Tiffany is a well of knowledge, like me and any other art teacher. Use us to bounce ideas and to make your life easier. Trust me, I would much rather be working on art or helping you with art than doing anything else school related.
This weeks assignment for most of the other classes is a lesson that I borrowed from my AP training in Western, but then found out that Mrs. Leigh had done it as well. Good on all of us! It's a good lesson and has a chance to make a big emotional impact.

Week of Feb 4-8 SNOW DAYZ? Ain't no body got time for that!

I truly don't care what people say about teachers and snow days. This one does not like them. They mess everything up in relationship to how our schedule works in the art room. These two unexpected missed days this part week, or so, has thrown us into quite a mix. Needless to say, as usual, we deal and and move on.
Due to these missed days we will have to make some additional concessions to our already tight schedule. Miss Botts will be giving some demos this week during AP Art Studio and leading our class in this project. We're looking forward to the project.

This week will be quite interesting. Not only were we out for Martin Luther King Jr Day, but we will be out this coming thursday for the Boys All 'A' State Tournament in Frankfort. Three days a work week is alright. However, it doesn't do an art room any good. Day = work. Needless to say, we will be critiquing tuesday and then 'starting' our new assignments. This short week should help Art I with their ceramics project drying.
